Sri Lanka’s hill capital is, perhaps, its most beautiful town. It is 488 metres above sea level, and next to Colombo, Kandy is Sri Lanka’s most visited place. The focal point of the town is the golden-roofed Dalada Maligawa, where the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha is enshrined. The highlight of the year is the Esala Perahera, when a replica of the relic casket is taken in procession, accompanied by exotically costumed dancers, drummers and some 100 elephants, on ten glittering nights in July/August. There are numerous shrines and temples in and around Kandy, where you will see rare paintings, frescoes, and stone carvings.

Visit Dalada Maligawa (1 hour)

Dalada Maligawa where Buddhists all over the world venerate the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha.  Watch the traditional rituals performed daily by the religious dignitaries of the temple in keeping with the cultural heritage of the country.  The ‘ Raja Wasala’ and the ‘Magul Maduwa’ within the Royal Palace complex dating back to 1784 explains the unique wooden craftsmanship in this historic temple.

Visit Pinnawela (1 hour)

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage: The Orphanage was established to feed, nurse and house young elephants abandoned by their mothers and displaced from their natural environment due to development projects. Most orphans cannot be introduced back to the wild as other elephant family groups will not accept them. They enjoy a good life with their human parents and many find foster homes in zoos around the world. It is most interesting to visit the Orphanage at feeding time to see the baby elephants been bottle fed, after which the entire herd is taken for a bath in the river.
