Mask making Museum in Ambalangod

En route to Colombo is the unambiguous town of Ambalangoda. The museum is by the side of the road, also houses the mask workshop, mini cultural centre and a small library. Apart from creating a lasting footprint on the country’s heritage, the museum is an authority on the traditional mask craftsmanship.

Visitors and collectors purchase various types of masks to adorn their homes and galleries. Locals also look for masks to place at the entrances of their houses. This they do as a means of dispelling the evil eye. “Evil Eye” is believed to be a gaze or stare superstitiously believed to cause harm to the occupant of the house.

Thereafter Madu River Cruise

Our description provided by Viator (Longley Planet)

Go on a wonderful boat ride down the Madu River with its flourishing ecosystem. Pass through the secretive passages created by the mangroves. See the basking crocodiles and water monitors. Visit one of the small islands with its cinnamon harvesting natives. Enjoy the restorative qualities of the avian life fish massage. Observe the water birds in their natural habitats.

Make your way to the Madu River, where this tour begins at 9am. Board a boat into the mangrove marshes of the Madu River, traveling through shadowy caverns formed by the trees, and interspersed with bright open stretches of water. Learn more about mangroves while watching for crocodiles, water snakes, tree snakes, and wild boars in their natural habitat. It’s also common to see cormorants, storks, and other birds, which hunt for prey in the river current. As you pass shallower areas of the river, you’ll spot pots for catching prawn and shrimp, then visit an old Buddhist temple on one of the river’s many islands. Pause at another island that’s devoted to growing cinnamon, with the chance to purchase fresh, aromatic cinnamon to bring home. If desired, you can stop by a fish massage parlor,  where you can dangle your feet into a fenced-off part of the river to get treated by the “massage fish” (own expense). This one- to two-hour boat tour concludes at the original departure point.

Finally visit the Turtle Hatchery in Kosgoda

The first turtle hatchery founded by Victor Hasselblad is situated in Kosgoda. Turtles beach in Kosgoda to lay their eggs. The fisherman keep watch and take these eggs to sell them in the city fish market or consume them as a healthy meal. The Turtle Foundation purchase  these eggs and hatch them in their own hatcheries. Once hatched, the baby turtles are provided refuge for three days and released into the sea.

Back to the highway from Bentota and proceed to Colombo Hotel by Evening.
